Instructions BEFORE IV Moderate Sedation

  1. To ensure you have an empty stomach, do not eat or drink anything for at least seven hours prior to your appointment, but you are encouraged to drink clear liquids (such as water, apple juice and Gatorade) up until 2 hours prior. Drinking liquids prior prevents dehydration as well as having “flat” veins for the IV placement. If you have hypoglycemia, please discuss this with Dr. O’Loughlin prior to surgery. The patient may take very small sips of water prior to the appointment if needed for dry mouth.
  2. Unless specified otherwise, all medicines taken on a routine basis should be continued without interruption even if it needs to be within during 2hrs of the appointment. Please swallow with a minimal amount of water.
  3. A responsible adult who the patient knows personally must accompany the patient to the clinic and remain there throughout the entire procedure. Following the sedation, this responsible adult must drive the patient home and a responsible adult should remain with the patient for the next 24 hours.  Patients who are minors (persons under the age of 18 years) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to the appointment.
  4. Patients should wear clothing which is not restricting to the neck or arms. Patients should wear  loose-fitting tops on which the sleeves can be rolled to the shoulder.
  5. Contact lenses must be removed prior to sedation.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW ANY OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN RESCHEDULING THE SEDATION APPOINTMENT.
